Artist’s Statement
Canadian artist Elizabeth Hutchinson creates expressive oil paintings through close observation and strong visual memory. She tucks sketchbooks into her pockets or leaves them in the car, where she sometimes paints with a small travel pochade box. Over time, this consistent practice has honed her skills and instincts for form. Her work balances colour against complex neutrals. She writes, “There’s so much to see and understand in our visual world. Drawing and painting are my way. I draw and paint to find order in complexity and to discover new and thrilling things about daily life.”
Her subjects include intimate still life in her studio, landscapes near home or at her cabin, and people—observed from afar or cherished from her own life. Hutchinson paints with emotional presence, marked by wonder and appreciation.
