Lindsay Liang

Lindsay Liang is a New York-based Pacific Islander artist working across painting, collage, and conceptual drawing. Her work explores memory, distortion, and identity through surreal visual narratives. A published writer and researcher in both the sciences and the arts, she blends speculative fiction with ancestral fragments to question how we come to see—and missee—ourselves.

Artist’s Statement

My work navigates between illusion and belief, between the childlike and the grotesquely adult. Each piece begins with a memory—trying lipstick on a mirror, peering through glass, listening to an exiled opera singer—and ends with a distorted reflection of reality. I draw from my upbringing as a Pacific Islander, filtered through the displacement I experience in New York. Through layered media and speculative imagination, I question how perception is trained, how roles are inherited, and how identities are shaped not by essence but by external systems—beauty, performance, science, myth. My figures often exist in absurd or impossible conditions, suspended between selves, asking not “who am I becoming?” but “what am I already trapped inside?”
